What Happened:
Today we made bismuth crystals... Again. We continued different coloring methods. We first tried pure oxygen then we used salt water. When we used pure oxygen, it turned a really bright gold color, but we ran out of the pure oxygen in the middle of the coloring process so only part of the crystal was gold. The rest was purple and a little bit of blue. It worked out really well though.
What's the Science:
When we used pure oxygen, it was just air (with no other gases or pollution in it) which makes it gold and not any other colors like blue, green, or purple. When we used salt water, nothing different happened. It still turned the bismuth crystal a gold color but I think it would've been a different color if we added more salt.
Results:
I was satisfied with what we got on our first crystal, but the second crystal was the same as when we used regular water. I feel that if we added more salt then we would have gotten a different color, but that's pretty much it. I'm pretty happy with what we got.
Collaboration:
I worked with Andrew D. again. Andrew and I have gotten to know each other really well over the weeks that we've been doing bismuth, and he's really cool. He's very helpful, resourceful, and just very dedicated to what he's doing and I'm very lucky to be working with someone who loves to do what they do.
What Next:
If I were to do this again, I would add more salt to the water because I feel I didn't add enough to the water for it to have a different effect. I still want to work with Andrew because we are just in the zone with the bismuth and we don't feel the need to add more members.
